In times of national disaster or calmity the Psalms help us to express our raw emotions to God, even if he seems absent. Psalm 44 helps by encouraging us to:
- Remember God's faithfulness in the past
- Express our present needs regardless of how bad life seems
- Appeal to God's lovingkindness for help
When everything seems so wrong and unfair, both in our lives and in our country, we should remember the following words from Jeffrey B. Kelly: "Christ's anguised cry from the cross is a divine way of telling people that God suffers with them in the bleakest moment of a heart broken by the forces of evil."
